Treatise Against the
Heretic Novatian
Post-Apostolic Church
INTRO
This was written around AD 255. The author is unknown, but he was most likely
a friend of Cyprian.
WORK
In this work, the author makes very bold and
harsh statements against Novatian and his schism from the Universal Church . The big problem with Novatian which he points
out is how unmerciful Novatian is towards Christians who had lapsed by
sacrificing to the gods or to the emperor but wanted to return in
repentance. Novatian refused to accept
them. It is on these grounds that the
unknown author labels Novatian a heretic.
Apart of Novatian himself, the greater part
of this work discusses all the reasons why repentance should be accepted and why
it is possible for anyone to be restored to the Church. This is a great work about the mercies of God
and the importance of showing compassion towards Christians who have sinned.
